Fujairah’s Umbrella Beach transformation already underway

MK2 jpgFujairah Observer took the chance to speak with HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Hamad Al Sharqi about his plans for the improvement of this much-visited public beach.

One of the unique elements of the Fujairah emirate are the unspoiled beachfronts- all year round you’ll see local residents, weekend visitors and international tourists taking in the beaches of Al Aqah, and those in Fujairah city.

Over the years many initiatives have tried to serve the public in developing an appropriate infrastructure with umbrellas, barbeques, land and waterfront development, as well as public parks and landscaping.

In part of his continued efforts to improve public landscaping and community spaces, Sheikh Maktoum bin Hamad Al Sharqi took the time to discuss his plans for the Al Faseel Beach with us, known to most of us as ‘the Umbrella Beach’ due to the distinctive multi-coloured shelter and barbeque areas.

His Highness Sheikh Maktoum said the development of the beachfronts in Dubai inspired him to take this action, citing how ‘simple and clean’ they are. After that he felt he had to take the step of renovating the highly attended beach- he said, “I see hundreds of cars every weekend gathering there with basically nothing to do”.

The plans for the development of this important community space are the development of a padded jogging track, boardwalk-style wooden walkway, enclosed playgrounds for children and families, public toilets and potentially some restaurants.

For many years, residents have requested more public parks- over the past five years, Sheikh Maktoum has spearheaded many beautification efforts that have vastly improved public landscaping. The ‘Umbrella Beach’ is the first of the two major beaches to see development, and next to be addressed is the Fujairah Corniche.

The development of the beach will be overseen by prominent locally based landscaping and civil works firm AQUATECH, and afterwards maintained by Fujairah Municipality.

All the works are being done with simplicity, safety and environment in mind: the beach will have lifeguards on duty, as well as security. The municipality will enforce a strict no-littering policy; Sheikh Maktoum added, “Anyone seen dropping litter or barbecuing on the beach will be fined. Keep your city clean and behave in your city how you would behave in your own home”.

The project will be adhering to a strong culture of environmentally sustainable public space development that Sheikh Maktoum is encouraging; a small desalination plant will serve the area on the southern side of the beach, which will be disguised by trees. Many of the plant varieties used in the landscaping projects done around Fujairah are native to the region, or types that require less water. Innovative design techniques are also used to reduce the use of municipal water in a water scarce region.

Having a dedicated desalination unit means that many trees can be planted, creating natural shade and greenery- it is estimated that anywhere between 500-600 trees and shrubs will be planted during the early stages of development.

Well-maintained community space is an vital part of creating social bonds amongst the many nationalities that co-exist in the UAE, and the new infrastructure improvement has the potential to strengthen our public morale. These locations are more than just the places that weekends are spent; they are places that create a sense of belonging in a young nation.

Creating a culture of community is an investment for our home. Fujairah Observer is grateful for the time and effort of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Hamad Al Sharqi.
