Course 1: Module 1:
Ship Safety, Pollution & Low Sulphur Usage

This 1-day course will cover challenges for the switch over between high sulfur bunker fuels to low sulfur fuel distillates when entering ECAs and vice-versa. Participants will acquire knowledge on the various pollution Protocols under IMO main conventions such as MARPOL, SOLAS and STWC. Course 1: Module 2:
Bunkering Operations – An Introduction

This 1-day course is designed for newcomers to the bunkering industry. It covers the fundamentals of the bunkering industry taught through comprehensive theory and real-world practical examples. It will give delegates a full spectrum of bunkering operations expected in their work through exercises and interactive team play, to exemplify concepts, standards, proven practices and procedures, as well as the tools and techniques of the industry. Your course director for the above events is Mr William Tan, Vice President, Miyabi Industries Pte Ltd is trained in Environmental Engineering and has a Master’s Degree in International Business. He is well known within the bunkering industry from Europe, to Middle East to Asia, his expertise being much sought after by industry as an expert witness, technical consultant, mediator and arbitrator on bunker dispute cases. He has more than 23 years in the marine industry having worked with DNV Petroleum, Marine Fuel Consultants International Pte Ltd and currently Miyabi Industries Pte Ltd as Vice President & its Principle Consultant. The company specializes in fuel, lubricants, risks assessments, loss control and claims recovery for the bunkering & shipping community.

Course 2: Bunker Fuel Supply & Economics

Focused on bunker fuel economics from a blend stock manufacturing point of view as well as the point of view of blenders, the course will emphasize IMO low sulfur regulations and changes to manufacturing costs. The course director, Mr John Vautrain, a chemical engineer with over 30 years’ experience in refinery, gas processing and petrochemical developments, is founder of Vautrain & Co Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based energy economics consulting firm. He holds a Master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Utah. Mr Vautrain has been consulting since 1981 when he was with Purvin & Gertz in Dallas, Los Angeles & Singapore and served as manager of two consulting offices as well as director of the firm. His previous engagements were with Phillips Petroleum Company and Union Carbide Corporation in petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing operations.

Course 3: Bunker Fuel Blending

Over the course of two days, the program seeks to focus on bunker fuel blending techniques concentrating on creation and optimization of profitable blend formula. In addition to comprehensive analysis of blend components including pricing and the environmental impact, the program seeks to educate participants through real life case studies and exercises. The course director, Mr Ara Barsamian currently President & Chief Executive Officer of Refinery Automation Institute LLC, a fuels blending automation consulting firm, which specializes in the profitable growth, development & implementation of blending operations and technology. Ara has a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the City University of New York and is a member of ASTM, AIChE, ISA & IBIA. He was previously with Exxon Research & Engineering Company where he designed, implemented, started up and commissioned over 20 blending and oil movement systems across the US, Europe, South America, the Middle East & Asia.

 

A half-day laboratory visit is planned with courses 1 & 3 on 27 March 2017 which will encompass understanding how fuel samples are prepared & tested and the impact of variations in test methodologies. The visit will also cover viscosity & compatibility spot tests for bunkers.
