Rising Sun Centre Special Needs Adults work placement program

RisSun2 jpgThe Rising Sun Centre for Special Needs saw the launch of its pilot program #inclUSion earlier this month. Working in collaboration with local businesses, the program provides much needed vocational training and work placement opportunities for young adults with special needs - the first of its kind on the East Coast.

The program is also helping to spread awareness in the community of the capabilities of special needs adults by providing them with an opportunity to show employers that they can learn and do a given task independently and to a good standard. #inclUSion is helping employers look beyond the candidate’s limitations and to see them not a burden (as they are often perceived) but capable future employees.

A manager at a local Lebanese restaurant was initially worried about taking on the responsibility of training a special needs adult in a busy restaurant but after just half an hour on the job exclaimed “this guy is great, let him come every day!”

Another manager stated, “accommodating him during non-peak hours gives him a chance to learn various tasks in a stress-free environment.  We have not received any complaints from either staff or customers, actually the opposite, lots of good positive feedback”.

The ultimate aim of #inclUSion is to help young adults with special needs to become more independent, integrating them into society and enhancing the quality of their lives by empowering them to find meaningful employment.

Mr Mohamed Payab of NB Flowers, another company involved in the programs says, “we are part of this society and it is our humanitarian and social responsibility to assist those who need care and are less advantaged than we are”.

Although Federal Law 29 issued in 2006 by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, gives people with special needs equal rights to education and training there is still a huge gap in society with not enough opportunities for useful long term occupation for special needs adults.

Jessica Bladh, General Manager at Rising Sun says, “As a society, I think it is everyone’s responsibility to create learning opportunities and eventually jobs for individuals with special needs.  Who can do that better than the professionals in the work field? I challenge all companies in Fujairah to step up and come forward to take part in the #inclUSion initiative. As the African proverb goes: “It takes a village to raise a child”.  Join us in the #inclUSion program, together we can make a difference!”

If your organisation would like to be a part of the pilot program by offering a special needs student a work placement or by sponsoring a shadow teacher please contact the centre at 09 2224004 or info@risingsunfujairah.org for more information.
