Boost your self- confidence

Jumper jpgIn my History lessons, I came across numerous personalities who attained great accomplishments in life. Among them the most inspiring one was the life of Abraham Lincoln. His life resembles the story of Phoenix, a long-lived bird in Greek mythology who obtains new life by arising from the ashes.  His life was a saga of courage, self – confidence, perseverance and never gives up attitude. He tasted setbacks and failures right from his birth, till he became the President of United States of America. 

 

Born in to poverty, Lincoln was faced defeat throughout his life. His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them. He lost eight elections. He lost his job and wanted to go to law school but couldn’t get in. Later he borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt. In 1835 he was engaged to be married but the premature and untimely death of sweetheart made him heartbroken. He suffered nervous breakdown. In 1849 in a desperate attempt, Lincoln applied the job of land officer in his home state and was rejected. In 1856, he sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party’s national convention and got less than 100 votes. But continuous failures didn’t affect his self -esteem. He could have quit many times – but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of  United States of America. 

 

Lincoln was a champion and he never gave up. The famous words of Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win twice and  the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences is testifying the life of Abraham Lincoln.  ‘Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained’’.

Many of us want to achieve great things in life such as a successful career, a prolific business, higher education, a dream home, a happy family life, riches, fame and many more. However fear and lack of self –confidence held us back in pursuing our dreams. Self-confident people are admired by others and inspire confidence in others. They face their fears head-on and tend to be risk takers. The circumstances may be not favourable, but they strive to overcome any obstacles that come in their way with absolute will power and courage. 

 

How can we develop self –confidence? How to alleviate fear and look forward to achieve our dreams? Here I try to give easy, step by step and practical ways to boost confidence in life. 

 

Trust in the Almighty: People who pray and submit their lives to Almighty are seem to be confident to face the challenges in life. Those who rely on the help and protection of God will not fear anything in life. They are always confident and calm. 

 

Think positively and act positively: We should avoid negative self- talk instead whisper to ourselves that ‘I am able, I can do it’.  Always connect with people who encourage you. Avoid the company of negative and hostile people who demoralize your self- esteem.

 

Empower yourself with knowledge: Empowering yourself, in general, is one of the methods for building self-confidence. Develop the habit of reading. You become more knowledgeable by doing research and studying.

 

Groom yourself: We must invest more time to groom ourselves ie. to dress smartly, to style your hair, to  give yourself a clean shave  and to have an attractive appearance.

 

Set a small goal and achieve it: Many aim for big things at once, and when they fail, they get disappointed. Remember the saying ‘Rome was not built in a day’. Set a small target in the beginning and once you achieve it, move to the next.

 

Know your strengths and weakness: Get to know yourself well. Start listening to your  thoughts. Start writing a journal about your strong and weak areas and try to cash on strong points and to overcome your weak points.

 

Work on your body language: Maintaining eye contact, an upright posture, listening others patiently, speaking slowly and clearly etc. would improve your communication skills and help to boost your confidence. 

 

Prepare well: Whether it is an exam or an interview or a public speaking prepare well to enhance your confidence level. Fear grips people who are not prepared well to face the task. 

 

Exercise: Our mental is closely connected with the physical health. Remember the saying, ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’. Taking up sport or exercise can help you feel better in lots of different ways.

 

Count on your successes: No matter how small they may seem to you, take time to praise yourself and reflect on what you did well.
