Over 150 triathletes took part in the first race of the second series of the Oceanic Triathlon in October hosted at the Oceanic Hotel Resort and Spa in Khorfakkan. The popular event first launched earlier this year and has become a key race in the sporting calendar in Sharjah with athletes coming from all over the UAE to take part.
Athletes enjoyed the Short Course which consists of an 800 metre swim in the Oceanic Hotel Resort and Spa’s natural bay, a 30 kilometre cycle through the beautiful town located along the Gulf of Oman and a 7 kilometre run along the corniche before enjoying the post event celebrations with friends and family at the resort.
The event also saw a number of younger athletes take part in the Super Sprint which consists of a 375 metre swim, a 12 kilometre cycle and a 2.5 kilometre run, giving those new to the sport a chance to gain valuable experience in a beautiful setting.
Speaking about the Oceanic Triathlon Series, Race Director Trace Rogers said: “We’ve seen this event go from strength to strength and it’s exciting to be launching the second series so soon after the first. Demand for this type of event is high and it’s a great opportunity to showcase another beautiful part of the UAE.”
Speaking about the event Acting Chief Executive Officer – Sharjah National Hotels, Mr Ian Phillips said: “The partnership with the Oceanic Triathlon Series is a great success and I am delighted to host the athletes once more for the second series. We hope this inspires many others to visit this beautiful town.”
Crossing the line in first place and taking top spot on the men’s podium was Andy Mac with a total time of one hour 1:28:25. Andy was closely followed by Jonathon Huntley with a time of 1:31:41 and Matthew Suddich took third place on the podium with a time of 1:33:05
Anna Pritchards took first place in the women’s race with a total time of 1:43:4, followed by Annabelle Rust crossing the finish line with a time of 1:45:29 and third place was Alixe Turner with a time of 1:59:56.
The Super Sprint was won by G.Carlo Tricasi Candiano with a time of 39:41 for the men’s race and Islay De Nil took first place with a time of 44:25 for the women’s race.
The Oceanic Triathlon Series is fully supported by the Sharjah police, Sharjah Civil defence and the Sharjah Sports Council.
