Fujairah FC promoted to Arabian Gulf League

FujFCnew jpgDiego Maradona is no longer in charge but Fujairah have still achieved their goal and finished up in the Arabian Gulf League for the upcoming season!

The legendary Argentine left the club by mutual consent after failing to secure automatic promotion from the second tier on the last day of the season last month. The 57-year-old has since signed a three-year contract with Dynamo Brest, currently eighth in the Belarusian Premier League, and will serve not as a coach but as club chairman according to reports in newspapers.

The Arabian Gulf League went down from 14 teams to 12 last season after the merging of Al Shabab, Al Ahli and Dubai Club to form Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club, and Sharjah’s merger with Al Shaab to form Sharjah Sports and Cultural Club.

Next season however, the league will go back up to 14 teams.

In order to determine who would go up with the winners and runners-up of the First Division (second tier) Bani Yas and Kalba, a play-off was held between AGL relegated sides Emirates and Hatta, and the third and fourth-placed finishing sides from the second tier, Fujairah and Al Hamriyah.

Now with the experienced Emirati, Abdullah Mesfer appointed, he took charge  of the playoffs and led the Wolves to a 2-1 win over Hatta on Wednesday 9th May, with Argentinian striker Danilo Carando netting on four minutes and again on 81 minutes - either side of Hatta’s Mohammad Malallah’s 55th minute equaliser.

In the other play-off, Emirates held on for a goal less draw away to Al Hamriyah in their second leg, after having edged their first leg home game 1-0.

Fujairah FC have confirmed the signing of 28-year-old Algerian forward Mohammad Benyettou who joins from Saudi Arabia’s Al Shabab.

Fujairah FC also welcome Fernando Gabriel, Abdullah Ismail, Abdulla Alnobi and Khalifa Abdulla to ‘the Wolves’. They will all be valuable additions to the team.

Several other players have renewed their contracts so all very positive for the upcoming season!
