Fujairah hosted the 2016 GCC Men’s and Junior Teams Tennis Championships at the Fujairah Tennis and Country Club (FTCC) in December.
Organised by Tennis Emirates (TE), with the cooperation of the GCC Tennis Organizing Committee, the GCC Junior U-14 and U-18 and Senior Teams competition was held from December 18th-23rd, and the GCC Individual Men’s Championship followed at the same venue from December 24th-27th.
Held this year as part of the UAE National Day celebrations, both events were conducted under the patronage of HH Dr. Sheikh Rashid Bin Al Sharqi, Chairman, Fujairah Culture and Media Authority. Unique to this year was the participation of Mrs Aseel Chahine the only GCC female ITF Certified Referee.
The six GCC teams played each other in the Round Robin tournament over the course of a few days before the top finisher was declared the winner in each of the three categories.
The singles competition had a draw of 32 players, whilst the doubles saw 16 pairs in action.
In the Men’s competition, Kuwait took top spot with Qatar taking second and Bahrain in third place.
Kuwait also took top spot in the U14’s with Qatar again taking second spot and KSA in thiird.
Qatar triumphed in the U18’s competition with UAE in second place and KSA third.
A Prize Giving Ceremony was held around the FTCC pool on Friday 23rd December followed by the official Gala Dinner with the closing ceremony was held on December 27th and the top three finishers received trophies and medals.
