The Embassy of Japan in the UAE hosted the inaugural Judo Japanese Ambassador’s Cup with the cooperation of UAE Wrestling, Judo, and Kick-boxing Federation. The Ambassador of Japan successfully launched the competition with the participation of many young Judokas from all over the UAE.
In a statement H.E. Kanji Fujiki, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE said that Judo is one of the traditional martial arts of Japanese origin, and is now one of the most beloved sports in the world.
He added that Judo had become popular in the UAE and he acknowledge that the UAE leaders including H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, value Judo for its philosophy and spirit such as self-discipline and mutual respect.
When H.H. Sheikh Mohamed visited Japan in 2014, His Highness expressed his wish to foster young Judokas for Olympic Games and asked Mr. Yasuhiro Yamashita, the Judo Gold medallist of 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, for his cooperation. After that, Japan and the UAE have strengthened Judo promotion in the UAE together.

The Ambassador perceived the high potentials of aspiring Judokas in the UAE through the recent competition and the Japanese Embassy has promised to contribute more to the promotion of Judo in the UAE, enhancing the cooperation with the UAE Wrestling, Judo, and Kick-boxing Federation, and he hoped to witness the success of young Judokas who participated in this tournament at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
More than 150 judokas took to the mat in this inaugural event which was open to youngsters (under-15), from schools and clubs around the UAE and played across eight categories in both male and female divisions.
