UAE Jiu-Jitsu team wins 15 medals at Ashgabat

The UAE ranked in the first place for jiu-jitsu with 15 medals at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.


Khalfan Balhol, 28-year old Silver medallist and brown belt said: “I’m very proud, thanks be to God, for the great achievements we’ve secured at the Asian Indoor Sports and Defense Sports Championship.


“I’d like to dedicate this success to our wise leadership and the UAE people. In 2017, I’ve participated in three championships, and managed to win a gold at the Thailand Beach Championship, a silver medal at the Asia Championship in Vietnam and finally a silver medal here at the Asian Indoor Championship, and going forward I am determined to secure further successes for my country and prepare myself for the big championships that are coming up,” he added.


The UAE National team participated with 12 players in six different weights, where Taleb Al Karbi won the gold medal in the 69 kg category, Faisal Al Ketbi won the gold medal for the weight category under 94 kg after beating Zayed Al Kaabi in a purely Emirati final, while Khalfan won the silver medal in the under 85 kg weight category.


Yahya Al Hammadi and Saood Al Hammadi won bronze medals in the over 94 kg and under 77 kg weight categories respectively. A bronze medal was also won by Bashayer Matroushi, who added the first women’s medal for the UAE at the championships.


“All the players came to Ashgabat loaded with ambition and high hopes of winning after a successful year of titles and medals,” Faisal Al Ketbi, UAE national team player said.


Al Ketbi appreciated the support and generous patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.


“Our goal was to achieve the maximum number of medals, I am honoured to be a member of the National Olympic Committee under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, who gave both male and female athletes the chance to compete at these games,” he concluded.
