The Contest

Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition which considered as an important part of the Toastmasters educational program. They provide an opportunity for Toastmasters to gain speaking experience, as well as an opportunity for other Toastmasters to learn by observing proficient speakers.

Each year thousands of Toastmasters compete in the International speech, Humorous, Table Topics and Evaluation contests. Competition begins with club contests and winners continue competing through the area, division and district levels. The International competition has two additional levels which are the semifinal and the World Championship of Public Speaking. Thousands of Toastmaster members participate in the international contest held annually, but a member can only compete in one area contest of a given type in the final round. Participating in contest is free of cots for both members and clubs. Speech Contest Rulebook is available online in the Toastmaster Website, this booklet contains the rules and standard procedures for conducting the International, Evaluation, Humorous, Table Topics, and Tall Tales speech contests. Members who plan to involve in conducting or competing in a speech contest, they should read these rules carefully and follow them. By doing so, a member will ensure a fair speech contest and an enjoyable event for himself and for everyone.

Contests in brief:

International Speech: where contestants present a five- to seven- minute speech on any subject they choose. All districts must conduct this contest. The Toastmasters International Speech Contest is so called because, unlike the other contests, each district winner goes on to the Toastmasters International Convention to compete for the title of World Champion of Public Speaking. There is no requirement for the type or topic of the speech but, at the higher levels, inspirational speeches often win.

Humorous Speech: where contestants present a humorous speech that must be thematic in nature (opening, body, and close), not a monologue (series of one-liners). The Humorous Speech Contest is the most fun for the spectator. After all, we all like to laugh. This is not stand-up comedy. Contestants present speeches on topics of their own choosing and make them as humorous as they can.

Tall Tales Speech: where contestants present a speech on a topic that is highly exaggerated and improbable in theme or plot. This one involves telling a far-fetched story. It needs skills of telling a tall tale in a very nature way, it encourages us to be more expressive than we normally are.

Table Topics Speech: An impromptu speech, all contestants are assigned the same topic, told to them when they are introduced by the contest chair. Table Topics Contest are also conducted by many districts. Participants would rather not have to write and practice a planned speech. The speech is just like the Table Topics run regularly in the club meetings.

Evaluation: where contestants observe a five-to seven-minute test speech and then present a two-to three-minute evaluation of the test speech.

The Speech Evaluation Contest has the potential for having the greatest impact on the clubs themselves. If a contestant becomes a better evaluator by participating, he or she is not likely to forget those skills when the contest is over. Instead, they take that new skill level back to their club and then serve as an example for other members, raising the quality of the evaluations in the entire club. This, in turn, raises the value of the Toastmasters experience.

Many advantages achieved for participants, they become strong speakers. They made a quantum leap in their speaking ability and they never looked back. All members are strongly urging to participate even if they only compete at the club level, it will challenge them. If a member wants to grow … If a member wants to be stretched … If a member wants to become a better speaker, he or she should actively participate in club contest. Participate or at least attend the area, division and district contests whether or not he wins.
