
For Fourth Year, Starwood Hotels and Resorts around the globe join together to mark Environmental Awareness Event Le Méridien Al Aqah organizes Beach Clean-Up and Tree and Flower Planting Ceremonies to Commemorate Special Day
By spending an hour in the dark Le Meridien AlAqah joined millions around the world to send a powerful message about a brighter future for the planet. Le Méridien Al Aqah turned off its lights in observance of Earth Hour, the global environmental awareness event created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
This year marked Starwood’s third annual participation in Earth Hour, making it one of the biggest worldwide companies to make a global statement with a voluntary hour of darkness.
People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet. To underscore parent Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.’s (NYSE: HOT) dedication to environmental sustainability, the award-winning resort also shared other energy-saving measures during Earth Hour, March 31st at 8:30pm. localtime. Among them: Turning off exterior signage lighting; dimming or turning off non-essential interior lighting; using candlelight in appropriate public areas such as restaurants and bars; and using in-room voicemail messages and in-room television messages to inform guests about Earth Hour observances.

The hotel also organized a beach clean-up and tree planting and kids fl ower planting ceremonies on March 31st, 2012. In addition to this, there was an Earth Hour Guest Cocktail Reception on the 31st evening at 8:30pm on the hotel’s helipad on the lawns. The hotel was decorated with Earth Hour banners and hotel staff wore Earth hour T-shirts and badges.
“In this day and age when we have to contend with major issues such as global warming and water pollution, energy efficiency has to be a priority. Le Méridien Al Aqah participates in Earth Hour every year, a testament to our steadfast commitment to the environment and conservation,” said Patrick Antaki, General Manager, Le Méridien Al Aqah.
Le Méridien Al Aqah plays a lead role in environment protection in the region with its various initiatives involving key partners like Emirates Diving association, Al Boom Diving, Dibba municipality etc setting an example in the society by the resort’s commitment towards corporate social responsibility. Recent and ongoing initiatives include, the Project Aware Clean Up, the Al Aqah Reef Ball Project, Blood Donation Camp, Clean Up Arabia and International year of the reef campaign, not to mention energy saving techniques implemented throughout the hotel to save water and light.
