One year after opening the first Accor brand hotels in the Emirate of Fujairah, General Manager Karim Zaki talks about his best moments of the year, gives advice for aspiring hoteliers and discloses his favorite spot in the hotel.
What were the highlights of the past 12 months for you?
We added value to Fujairah as an Emirate. Due to our diverse brands and services we became the best place for conferences and events. Our daily services and facilities offer guests more and better quality options.
What were the most challenging moments in the past year?
All three hotels are the first Accor brand hotels in the Emirate of Fujairah and Adagio Fujairah was at that time, the first of it’s kind in the Middle East.
The biggest challenge was definitely to create awareness and attract business to the hotel, which we managed to overcome successfully.
The three hotels do a lot of partnership and charity activities in Fujairah, why do you find it important?
We are part of the Fujairah community and we are obliged to serve. Our team members run marathons for good causes; we provide sponsorships and donate to local communities. We want to see Fujairah grow and thrive.
Novotel Fujairah is famous for its Pool Parties, how did it all start?
We had a corporate Pool Party at the very beginning and then we thought to make it monthly for all our guests. We always try to change and keep it interesting. In April’s Pool Party we are planning something quite special and we will share it soon on our Social Media.
Do you have a favourite spot in the three hotels?
I have my apartment in Adagio Fujairah, so I would say it is my bedroom.
How does an usual day look like in your office?
The most important part is the 9 o’clock meeting with Heads of Departments, where we discuss daily operations and guest feedback. After that, I work in the office or have meetings outside. In the evening I meet guests in the hotel’s outlets. Like tonight, Saturday, I will be spending time in the Jet Set Lounge as we have Karaoke Night there every Saturday and I want to know what our guests think about it.
What can you advise for aspiring hoteliers? What kind of traits does one need for this job?
One has to care for people and always provide good service, never go below standard.
Lastly, what have you planned for the next 6 months?
We are working to promote Fujairah as a tourist destination. In April we plan some Easter fun for families, Pool Party and starting from June we will be offering special packages for the Holy Month of Ramadan.
