Fujairah Marine Life Conservation Clean Up

Fujairah international Marine club organized the Fujairah Marine Life Conservation on 25.12.2015 in collaboration with the Barracuda Diving Centre, the UAE Divers’ Centre and the UAE Falcons Diving Centre.

 

The purpose of the campaign is to clean up the marina’s harbour and conserve the marine life living in the harbour. It is also an awareness campaign to educate the public about the dangers of disposing waste in the sea.

 

The FIMC later signed a memorandum of understanding with the UAE Divers Voluntary Team to continue their cooperation to help maximize protection for marine life from pollution as both parties agreed to continue supporting and organizing Marine Life Conservation events.

 

The team consisted of 52 divers and 22 volunteers from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah and they removed six tonnes of rubbish throughout the day.

“Organising such initiatives is part of our role in preserving the marine life and educating the new generations on the importance of keeping it [the sea] clean,” said Major Ahmed Al Blooshi, Managing Director FIMC.

 

Divided into four groups, the divers covered about 15,000 square metres of sea and collected debris in the waters off marine club premises.

 

“The waste included a fibreglass boat, anchors and plenty of plastic bottles. All these objects can affect the ocean’s wildlife and damage it,” said Major Ahmed. “There are many penalties for breaching the rules of disposing waste from boats including having one’s boating licence revoked.”

 

“We are planning on organising this event every year with a regular awareness campaign in association with the environment department at Fujairah Municipality,” he added.
