What is CELTA?

CELTA is an initial qualification which can open up a whole world of exciting teaching opportunities. It is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the world-famous University of Cambridge, so you can rely on its quality and recognition.

 

The course:

• teaches you the principles of effective teaching
• provides a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners
• gives you hands-on teaching practice
• builds your confidence

There are five main units of learning:

• Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
• Language analysis and awareness
• Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
• Planning and resources for different contexts
• Developing teaching skills and professionalism.

You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge English, moderates each course. There are two components of assessment:

1. Teaching practice: You will teach for a total of 6 hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the 6 hours.
2. Written assignments: You will complete four written assignments: one focusing on adult learning; one on the language system of English; one on language skills; and one on classroom teaching.

To be awarded the CELTA certificate you must pass both components. There are three grades - Pass, Pass 'B' and Pass 'A'.

 

Am I eligible to apply?

Ideally you should:

• have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education
• be aged 20 or over
• have a standard of English which will enable you to teach at a range of levels

 

Language Requirement:

English native speaker level or near, i.e. CEFR C1.  You may be asked for test results as evidence of this level of English, e.g. IELTS Band 7.5 or equivalent.

How long is the course?

• The course will be run part-time over 10 weeks.

What are the dates and times of the course?

• Planned course dates are from April 6^th – June 5^th 2014
• The part-time course in Fujairah – FWC will be held 3 times a week:
  • Saturday 10.00am – 4.00pm (two Saturdays only) then 10.00 – 2.00pm
  • Monday & Wednesday 4.15 – 9.15pm
  • The first week (April 6^th – 10^th) will be an intensive week: 9.00am – 3.30pm Sun & Thurs, 10.30am – 7.30pm Mon & Wed. Tuesday free.

What documents do I need?

• Application form, fully completed, with attached passport photo
• Application task, fully completed, with hand-written writing task
• A copy of your passport identity page
• A copy of your highest qualification

 

What is the application process?

• Written applications are processed
• Successful applicants are invited for a group interview, which includes language, methodology and writing tasks
• Successful applicants are offered a place on the course at the end of the interview
• Applicants accept and pay deposit
• Applicants pay balance of course fees
