The new AED1.7 billion highway between Fujairah and Dubai is set to open in November of 2011, with the commissioning scheduled to happen in early December 2011.
The construction has been delayed due to the difficulty of having to pass through the mountainous regions which have caused a number of technical problems.
The 85 km Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Highway will link Dubai to the Central region and Fujairah and will significantly reduce travelling times by at least 40% between the eastern and western coast..
The first 45 kms of the highway is 3-lane dual carriage way with hard shoulder through the picturesque Hajar Mountains. The highway then links to an existing 2-lane highway going through the red desert sands on to the E611 also known as the Dubai Bypass Road.
Plans are already in place to upgrade this section to a 3-lane dual carriage in line with the rest of the highway.
The highway is designed according to international standards and will not allow heavy goods vehicles or quarry traffic.
Works include fly-overs, bridges, side protective barriers, lighting and underpasses.
The new transport link will have a positive economic effect for the region in general as the city boasts several new high-rises of offices and homes, and the addition of some brand new shopping malls.
